A group of local volunteers has formed a new nonprofit organization called Interfaith Winston-Salem that will offer free educational activities to increase understanding and respect among religious traditions.

Interfaith Winston-Salem will sponsor special events, classes, lectures and web-based learning.  In its first program, the group will collaborate with three local mosques to sponsor “Fast With Us So Others May Eat” in July and August during Ramadan.  Non-Muslims will be invited to fast according to their traditions and to collect non-perishable foods in support of the Second Harvest Food Bank.

In addition, Interfaith Winston-Salem will hold a series of storytelling nights, a lecture on the afterlife, an introduction to Buddhist meditation and a presentation on a Hindu-Christian encounter.  Other events will focus on the Christian Advent season and the time of Passover in Judaism.  The website contains video and audio lectures, an interactive quiz on religious knowledge and book discussion groups among other features.
